Traveling with Children: Fidget Toys

One of our favorite ways to keep kids entertained while traveling is to keep their hands busy. It’s a great way to distract them and channel some of that pent-up energy. Fidget toys are usually pretty small and consist of only one piece, so they can easily be thrown into a carry-on or activity bag. Here’s a list of some of our favorite fidget toys that are perfect for the road.

  Tangle Therapy

Tangles come in an array of different colors, textures and sizes. The pieces snap together and apart so you can make them as long or short as you like. They’re especially wonderful for children that require a lot of sensory stimulation to keep them focused.

We like to describe Eni Puzzles as a combination between a Rubik’s Cube and a Fifteen Puzzle. Unlike a Rubik’ cube, there’s not one set algorithm used for a solution, there’s a unique solution every time. Eni Puzzle keep hands and minds busy for a while.

Buckyballs easily keep older travelers entertained for hours. These super strong rare earth magnets are great for building different abstract forms and just feel good to have in your hands. Each set come in its own orange plastic case for easy portability.

Finger Fidgets by Maxim are little wooden cubes bound together with an elastic tie. They can be manipulated and combined to make some pretty interesting structures.

Maxim also makes wooden transformer fidgets. Each robot can be transformed into a car. They come in two different sizes and are great for increasing finger dexterity.

As the weather changes and the end of the school year nears, we know that many people are thinking about vacation. The next few weeks we will dedicate each Tuesday to our blog series, "Traveling With Children." If you have any tips for traveling with children, please leave them in the comments section. We're compiling a list to share with our readers.
